Dyspnoea is a common symptom in patients visiting the emergency department and has a wide differential diagnosis. Bulbar paresis caused by myasthenia gravis is an uncommon disorder and can therefore easily be missed. Unmasking of myasthenia gravis by ciprofloxacin, an antibiotic which is frequently prescribed, is a rare side effect of the drug that has seldom been reported. We describe a patient who developed severe respiratory distress due to a myasthenic crisis induced by ciprofloxacin in combination with steroids.
